Riverfestival presents Surf ‘n Symphony. Featuring The Queensland Orchestra. Musical Director and Conductor Sean O’Boyle.
With summer on the horizon, let’s celebrate the sun, sand and surf at Riverfestival’s exciting finale concert.
In a tribute to surf culture and Brisbane’s ongoing love affair with the beach, Riversymphony returns with the rich and evocative sounds of surf music from across the Pacific in Surf ‘n Symphony.
Experience Queensland’s only professional symphony orchestra, The Queensland Orchestra, under the masterful musical direction of Sean O’Boyle, performing alongside the Queensland Conservatorium Brass Ensemble and our very own Riverfestival surf band to deliver an uplifting tribute to the musical history of surf culture. The Riverfestival surf band will feature pre-eminent guitar player and vocalist Tim Gaze, formerly of legendary early 70’s Australian band, Tamam Shud. 60s surf music star Little Pattie will also make a special guest appearance to perform one of her classics.
This musical powerhouse will bring the beach to Brisbane with surf anthems like Bombora, Wipe Out, Hawaii Five-O and many of the Beach Boys’ timeless classics. You will discover the enduring influence of these surf sounds on pop music as well as samples from cult surf films like Morning of the Earth.
Bringing us into the 21st century will be the music of surf enthusiasts Ben Harper, Jack Johnson and Xavier Rudd, whose laid-back roots compositions are providing the soundtrack to the contemporary Australian surf scene.
Providing the narration for Surf ‘n Symphony is Australian music journalist Stuart Coupe, one of the few journalists to interview the reclusive Brian Wilson. So grab your Hawaiian shirt, friends and family and join us for this spectacular dip into surf culture, marking the close of our 10th Riverfestival.
